Trump Welcomes Families of Shot Military Members to White House
President Trump stated on Sunday that he has asked the relatives of a National Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the executive mansion.
He mentioned that he contacted her family and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Devastating Incident
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was lost her life in a shooting on last Wednesday in DC.
Her fellow service member, Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, continues receiving treatment in serious condition.
Gatherings across the state have been held in their remembrance.
Presidential Call
The commander-in-chief said he’s talked about a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both soldiers of the West Virginia Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to honor her,” the president told reporters. “And in the same way with him, no matter the outcome.”
Public Reaction
Attendees gathered over the weekend at a local school in West Virginia to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of the president’s national effort to aid public safety in DC.
Remembering Sarah Beckstrom
“She was the type of pupil that instructors hoped for. She carried herself with inner fortitude, a warm expression and a positive energy that inspired those around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the head of Beckstrom’s former high school, stated to the press. “She was caring, considerate and always willing to support those in need.”
Memorial arrangements for Sarah are in the process of planning.
Legal Steps and Government Changes
Officials have indicted a twenty-nine-year-old suspect with one count of homicide and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The tragedy led the government to halt refugee claims and temporarily stop providing visas to possessors of passports from Afghanistan.
Status of Wolfe
Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, started his military career in early 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the Associated Press.
He remains under medical supervision and is “battling to survive”, the state’s leader the governor said on television.
The state’s top lawyer Bondi informed a news show that she also intended to speak to the family.
Impact of the Fallen Soldier
Beckstrom, from her hometown, graduated from Webster County High in 2023 and joined the military shortly after, working as a military police officer with excellence, per the state guard.
“She had a lot of kindness and she absolutely had fortitude,” Morrisey addressed the audience at the vigil. “Though her life ended too soon, she has left a mark that’s going to endure.”
