Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
