Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Team

The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.

Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several past matches.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable decision.

Spin Options Weighed

There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.

However McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.

In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
