New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
