Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing undesired offerings can be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The presents reportedly stored in a storage room on the upper level of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

The detailed catalog remains made public, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

A Global Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

Meloni has been credited, mostly from within her party, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the state presents that are collected during a political career.
