Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
