I believed I nicked it - Carey on DRS survival.

Australia gloveman Alex Carey admitted he thought he had feathered the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System on day one of the third Ashes series Test against the English.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a superb 106 to aid the home side finish on 326-8 at the stumps in the Adelaide Oval.

The Incident

The home side were 245-6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team lodged a strong appeal, certain they had detected an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

After captain Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the replay reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a significant spike but this came before the ball had passed the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he believed there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was reprieved.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," said Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Controversial 'Snicko'

Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a several dubious incidents.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated England may take this latest incident further with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. That's the situation."

A Special Hundred

Carey's century was his first in Test cricket against England.

It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was in tears in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by pointing to the heavens.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.

"You can probably understand my glance skyward. I'm fighting back the tears. But, no, it was great."

Previous Ashes Drama

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a febrile final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he added: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"I might have gotten away with one."
