Gianni Infantino Indicates Keeping an Open Mind on Moving International Football Tournaments From Summer.
The FIFA chief has left the door open to more tournaments held in winter and international club competitions, asserting that soccer must “keep an open mind” about shifting key competitions from the summer period.
Discussions Underway for Future Match Timetable
Conversations are ongoing about the schedule beyond 2030, a major sticking point because of heightened congestion being applied by expanded competitions. FIFA has set up a working group to examine the issue, while the international organization has given itself a headache by assigning the 2034 competition to the Gulf country. That tournament will almost certainly be organized in colder seasons, as Qatar 2022 was. Infantino suggested soccer must become accustomed to untying itself from Europe's summer period.
“We're thoroughly examining specifics, ongoing conversations are happening,” he stated. “This isn't only about a single tournament, it's a general reflection. Even when playing in parts of Europe during July temperatures are extreme.”
Optimizing the Football Calendar
The president made these comments during the European Football Clubs conference in the Italian capital. He shared comparable views to hundreds of attendees, stating: “We need to examine the globalisation of the international match calendar.” The months of October and March were mentioned as “times when worldwide competition is feasible.”
This significant overhaul would generate controversy, although FIFA's ability to implement its wishes may be compromised if a formal complaint against its imposition of the calendar, presented to EU officials previously by league organizations, leads to proceedings being opened.
Enlarging the Global Club Tournament
FIFA is also looking at approaches to grow the global club competition. A 48-team structure could be implemented next time, possibly including a qualifying playoff event that whittles the final number down to thirty-two participants. The president referenced major proposals in his Rome speech, indicating they would “work to see how to expand this tournament, improved further, with greater influence.”
Candidate Nations for Tournament
European and African countries are leading candidates for the 2029 event, set to happen in the summer, although other contenders remain under evaluation. A swift return to the US might be considered and it is understood the Asian nation, which was scheduled to host the tournament in 2021 before the pandemic, remains interested.
FIFA is considering holding the Club World Cup every two years following 2029. Qatar appears most likely to stage the 2031 tournament, an arrangement that could be simpler to implement if Infantino's favored rejig come to fruition considering cold-weather timing would be inevitable.
Issues with Overseas League Fixtures
The president stated any permanent shift towards holding domestic competitions on other continents would be a major gamble. Ongoing circumstances saw authorization provided for games in America and Australia, emphasising this was granted as a special case. The organization's ultimate decision is a formality, yet Infantino seemed to imply the concept raised concerns.
“There exists a framework whereby we have games at national level, across continents and worldwide,” he elaborated. “This framework that developed football the premier athletic competition globally. Should we dismantle this framework, we take a big risk.”
Spanish Giant Reenters Fold
In additional news at the EFC general assembly, was confirmation of the Catalan club's comeback to the association, which was anticipated by the team's chairman Joan Laporta's presence at the formal event. The club had left the group after the abortive Super League project in 2021, which they had driven together with European giants.
The organization's leader Nasser al-Khelaifi joked that their rekindled relationship was made official during an amicable discussion. Their readmission appears to reduce chances on any resurgence of the controversial competition plan.
