Ashes Individual Ratings: Which England Cricketers Earned a 1/10 Rating?
'Top class' Head Century Puts the Aussies Cruising To Victory Against the English
England Player Ratings
Zak Crawley – One
Expected for Aussie pitches but recorded only the fourth duck in both innings from an England opener in just 11 balls.
Ben Duckett – Five
Got beginnings in both innings. His dismissal during the match was when it began to fall apart for England.
Pope – Six
Seems better for technical tweaks. Opening match of a series is usually his best, then it goes downhill. The team require him to kick on.
Joe Root – 1
Miles off that first hundred in Australia. England require the wisdom of their best player if they are to bounce back from this defeat.
Harry Brook – 5
His half-century during the initial knock was skittish, but valuable. Poor choice in the second innings.
Ben Stokes – 6
Came back from injury with a five-for, but appeared short of rhythm when batting. Lost control while fielding against Head's assault.
Jamie Smith – 4
Might possess the skills for Australia, yet must to smarten up. Will likely face plenty of short bowling going forward.
Atkinson – 5
Part of the impressive England initial bowling performance and tried to carry the fight while batting later on. Among the attack that fell apart on Saturday evening.
Brydon Carse – 5
Similar to the previous, with added mustard of getting dominated by Travis Head.
Jofra Archer – Five
Looked impressive with the ball initially and was the top of a bad bunch in the second. Might yet have an impact on the series.
Wood – 5
Finished without a wicket, yet extremely impressive to even get on the field given his time away.
Australia Individual Evaluations
Jake Weatherald – 6
Debutant had tough luck to be exposed to Jofra Archer early on, later played his part in the sensational pursuit of runs.
Khawaja – Three
An unusual Test. Did not look fully fit and had periods off the pitch. Held on to several key catches at slip, yet also seemed immobile in the cordon. Gets a mark for the injury which enabled Travis Head to open.
Marnus Labuschagne – Seven
An effective return to the team. Absorbed the English pressure more effectively than others initially, then supported Head in the second.
Smith – 5
Looked out of sorts early on. Needless pre-match comments on Monty Panesar.
Travis Head – 9
Possibly unfair to not award a perfect score, however he attempted a rather poor stroke in the first innings. His follow-on century was an historic innings.
Green – Five
Claimed the crucial wicket of Ollie Pope in the first innings. Shaken by one Mark Wood short ball when he batted. Barely required in the second half.
Alex Carey – Five
Attempted a counter-attack against England's bowlers on the first evening. Tidy with the gloves.
Mitchell Starc – 9
Shouldered the weight of the bowling in the absence of Pat Cummins and Hazlewood with the first Aussie Ashes 10-for for two decades.
Scott Boland – Six
Short of top form in the first innings. Got better in the second to trigger the England collapse.
Doggett – Six
Solid first appearance. More than able stand-in for the main bowlers and others.
Nathan Lyon – 2
Almost a spectator in a match dominated by fast bowling. Maybe picked up a knock after being hit by Mark Wood.
