A Quarter Century On, Darren Aronofsky's Masterpiece Remains the Most Terrifying Non-Scary Film Ever Made.
Fear appears in many ways. At times it's a haunted toy or a haunted house. On other occasions it's a wandering soul revealing its presence. Yet the scariest form of horror is often not attached to an item or a place, but instead a person. Occasionally, the most frightening creature doesn't hide under your bed. It resides within your thoughts.
The Inner Demons of Aronofsky's Classic
This is the scenario with Darren Aronofsky's year 2000 cult classic Requiem For a Dream, marking its quarter-century milestone. While a few contend it isn't a terror flick, many maintain it truly belongs. Certainly not, it omits a dark presence yanking an individual from their sleep during darkness, or a spirit board marker sliding across a Ouija board by invisible forces. But Requiem For A Dream focuses entirely on the devils that live inside of us, and the terrible actions human beings gripped by substance abuse inflict upon themselves — and people they care about — in an attempt to get by.
The Protagonist's Downfall
We first meet protagonist Jared Leto's character when he endeavors to take a television from his elderly mother, Sara. It's clear Sara cares for Harry, however at that instant we first meet them, Goldfarb's internal battles are presently coming out to play. Sara has locked herself within a storage space to escape Harry, who is hoping to hock the set for cash allowing him to get his hands on the movie's central foe: the narcotic.
Goldfarb's stare are dilated, frantic, pupils blown. His clothing is drenched with moisture due to narcotic craving. Sara peeks using the lock opening in the closet, viewing. This fails to be her kind, attractive, caring child. This represents the awful entity that emerges from within him from time to time. The mother understands provided she stays sufficiently, the storm will pass, and her true child will come back to her.
This is not the premier instance the young man has hocked Sara's television. To avoid the ongoing stealing, she's chained it to the heating unit, and keeps the unlock device to the padlock with her within the storage space. After the young man realizes this, he instantly adopts a tactic out of the usual emotional abuser's handbook, shouting, "Jesus, what's your intention? Are you attempting to get me to break Sara's TV? And damage the radiator too, and perhaps blow up the complete home, Mom? Is that what you're tryin' to do?"
Sara wordlessly slips the key to the security device beneath the entrance.
It's clear Harry feels guilty, however his shame is surpassed by the restless pain from severe drug craving. Immediately when he transports the dated set outside, where his close companion the friend has been anticipating, all considerations of remorse disappear. Subsequent to moving the television halfway across the city, Harry and Tyrone sell it for cash. Viewers don't observe them acquire the substance, and the term "heroin" is never once said out loud throughout the entire film. All we get are some quick tight frames of the drug being heated in a small container, then injected. An invisible speaker breathes out. The devil in the young man is content.
Temporarily.
Sara's Parallel Struggle
Simultaneously, Sara Goldfarb has journeyed across town to reclaim her entertainment system returned, and rapidly grows clear that she has a bit of an addiction herself. Because her partner left and her child transformed, Sara turns to eating and watching for comfort. Aside from Harry's inconsistent visits and the periods she dedicates outside tanning with other ladies in her apartment building, Sara seldom ventures outside. The screen serves as her portal to external reality, and she's especially fond of a bizarre gameshow-slash-infomercial hosted by a slimming authority named Tappy Tibbons. She dedicates long periods snacking on chocolate and watching the show, where random viewers are occasionally selected, receiving funds and a chance to be on television, which also serves as an ad for the expert's slimming aids.
Eventually, Sara obtains a telephone message notifying her she's been selected to participate in a television program, which constitutes the biggest news she has received for many years. She immediately establishes an objective: She desires to don the crimson garment she used for her son's graduation ceremony, enabling her to use it on stage throughout production. After failing to achieve the outfit's back zipped, she decides to decrease her mass. She experiments with food restriction, soon feels discouraged. At the advice by an acquaintance, Sara consults a medical professional, who immediately prescribes her stimulant medication for weight loss.
Dreams and Destruction
Harry and Tyrone, nevertheless, are working on dreams of their own. The plan involves obtaining some good dope, mix it with other substances to make it stretch more than its pure form, {and
